Thought to come from ancient Celtic & Norse origin, these ponies are related (& similar in appearance) to other northern breeds like those found in the Faeroes or Iceland. 2020-12-17 Comann Each nan Eilean, founded in 1972, is the main organisation for the promotion and preservation of the Eriskay Pony breed, Scotland's native horse. 2015-09-04 Eriskay Ponies are proving themselves very versatile in all spheres, with members of the Eriskay Pony Society taking part in activities ranging from pony club eventing to dressage, Western, Endurance, Driving and Jumping. Although they stand from 12.00 to 13.2hh they are tremendously strong for their size and can carry a light adult with ease. The Eriskay Pony is the last remnant of Scotland’s native horse.

Despite this, there are fewer than 300 Eriskay Ponies in the world and it is listed as critically endangered.

It is the mother society and holds the Studbook of Origin for the breed. HRH The Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, has graciously been the Society’s Patron since 1998. The Eriskay Pony is the only surviving variety of Hebridean pony and are found on the Hebrides islands off the coast of Scotland. They originated from the Celtic type with no imported bloodlines.

Eriskay ponies are the last surviving remnants of the original native ponies of the Western Isles of Scotland. They were crofters ponies, undertaking everyday tasks such as bringing home peat and seaweed and taking the children to school. Only the ponies willing to be trained and work hard, were retained, the others were culled.
